A question for you:

This is Soft Bear. He has been my pillow for twenty plus years. But Soft Bear has a problem: Soft Bear smells. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to clean him? I don't know if you can see from this photo, but he has lost some fur next to his right eye- so I am wary of just throwing him into a washing machine for fear that he would lose all of his fur...

dry cleaning perhaps?

Hand wash him in a very mild soap (like Ivory Snow) or a gentle shampoo. Rinse very well and squeeze out as much water as you can (don't wring). Wrap him in a big towel and squeeze to remove more moisture. When it appears you have out as much water as you can, lay him out flat to dry. I wouldn't put him in any machine either for washing or drying considering his age. Just let him dry naturally or if you have a hair dryer you could use that gently turning him over to get to all sides. I would NOT dry clean him! I think if you treat the washing/rinsing very gently he should not suffer too much hair lose.
Keep us informed!!

Soft Bear! Haven't seen him in a while. Say hi for me.

you might also consider re-stuffing him a bit after you wash him, he seems to have flattened out with age...

The flatness of softbear is one of his defining characteristics. He would look so very strange restuffed...
